OT: Help with Thunderbird settings

The equivalent in Thunderbird is to View Threads Unread. But it displays
in date order and loses the tree which makes long threads (such as "Are
cyclist allowed to race..."😉 very difficult to follow. To keep tree
order it seems to want to make all messages visible.

Can Thunderbird keep tree order yet hide the read messages; if so what
combination of buttons should I be using?

The newer version hasn't changed this feature.

Thunderbird is useful for email since it allows a separate inbox or each
addy. But I shall go against the flow and return to OE as a newsreader.

Try:

View/Sort By/Order Received, Ascending, Threaded
View/Messages/All
View/Threads/Threads with Unread
