Orthodontic treatment

I had orthodontic work done in my 12th & 13th years...this was over 50
years ago when braces were always "heavy metal" stuff.

Except for very sore gums for awhile when they initially were put on, I
never had any health repercussions such as you mention either back then,
nor to this day, (save for a very occasional lower backache which I
never had until II was in my 40ties so don't see any correlation there).
Was happy to get them off though after 2+ years.

Just my personal experience.

Yes, any treatment that alters occlusion can cause TMJ inflammation. See the
orthodontist and describe the symptoms. Often a small adjustment is all that
is needed to provide relief. Sometimes, though, other therapy is indicated,
including soft diet for awhile to reduce inflammation, oral or injected
steroids, or, in extreme cases, even surgery.

Add in events like auto accidents, sports injuries, & other trauma
that can alter occlusion as well.
