Sounds like the hospital staff is being a lot more careful this time, after
last year's debacle.

Hospitals are notorious for staph infections. My grandmother is
currently in the hospital fighting one she picked up during her last
hospital stay.

Thing is, the incidence of staph could be reduced by implementing simple
steps. The hospital she's in does that in the ICU, but not of the
general floors. Nice of them.

Twice I have picked up serious infections from day surgery. One was a
pneumonia, which I had to take 3 different antibiotics for a month to
control it. I was out of town when I became so ill I needed to go to emerg.
They couldn't figure out where I could have picked up such a infection until
I told them I had recently had day surgery. That apparently explained it
well to them. The next time, I ended up with a large local staph infection
at the incision site and a viral meningitis which the doctors also related
to the day surgery. That was the last surgery at that hospital.

Actually, Grandma might have walked into the hospital carrying that
staph in with her (it is after all resident flora on our skin) and the
rates for community acquired drug resistant staph (MRSA) are soaring
faster than hospital acquired MRSA.
It isn't uncommon to have to treat these patients pre-operatively when
preparing them for big surgeries to try to prevent surgical wound
infection. Many hospitals also now wash the patients own hands down with
alcohol foams 3x day as patients often touch their own wounds or
dressings and can spread germs.
