    January 22, 2004 PARIS (AP) -- Olympic medalist Philippe Gaumont was placed under investigation --
    one step short of being formally charged -- in a police probe of possible drug use by the Cofidis
    pro cycling team.

    Gaumont is suspected of supplying the banned performance-enhancing substance EPO to another cyclist.

    Gaumont won a bronze for France in the team time trial at the 1992 Games and competed for Cofidis in
    last year's Tour de France. Cofidis is one of France's top teams.

    He was detained Tuesday with Cofidis teammate Cedric Vasseur when they returned to Paris from a
    training session in southern Spain.

    The doping probe began last summer, but the first arrests came last week when narcotics officers
    stopped former Cofidis rider Marek Rutkiewicz at a Paris airport. Suspected doping products,
    including growth hormones and other substances in unlabeled vials, were found in his bags,
    police said.

    Also Thursday, the French news magazine Le Point published extracts from what it said were phone
    taps between other people implicated in the probe.

    Investigators said they could not confirm that the excerpts were genuine.

    Of course, it has to be an American source that speaks of Gaumont as an Olympic medallist (bronze in
    the TTT, whoohoo!) when he also won Ghent-Wevelgem and was an eternal hopeful for Paris-Roubaix. I
    was sure he was going to finish in the front group at least the year he broke his leg in the
    Arenberg forest.

    stay clear of this [censored].

    The first is known as VDB's first excursion into veterinary medicine.

    It looks like it's his -third- go-round on this kind of thing:

    "Philippe Gaumont reinstated in the Cofidis team

    French rider Phillipe Gaumont, implicated in the "Sainz-Lavelot" doping affair, and subsequently
    suspended from his Cofidis team has now been reinstated.

    The investigation into the affair, which also involved Belgian star Frank Vandenbroucke, "has shown
    that Philippe Gaumont neither took, nor distributed doping products," said Cofidis in an official
    statement. "In this situation, it would illogical to maintain the suspension of the rider."

    "Certainly, Philippe Gaumont has been imprudent in this business by using products without knowing
    their composition without informing the team doctor, and we have asked him to follow team medical
    directions in future", Cofidis specified. Gaumont has readily agreed to this, and is looking forward
    to racing again with the team. Previously implicated in a doping affair in 1996, Gaumont had been
    suspended on May 10, at the same time as his leader Frank Vandenbroucke. Reinstated a few weeks ago
    in the team, the Belgian won Tuesday's 16th stage in the Tour of Spain."
