Icycles lists them as double, but says they have holes for a third
chainring.

And they are not the "older style". These are relatively current. Some
have reported them to be of poor design with the channeled outer
surface. I seem to remember some pic's of a broken one somewhere around
midpoint.

Actually, that crank looks like the 130mm Ritchey "Pro" crank that is
also sold as a "cross" crank, e.g., 48x38, like here:

I agree that you should examine this "i-beam" style crank has its
similar to the Ritchey WCS compact crank which has been known to break:
