I'm in the midst of a fixed gear conversion using an older Sears Robeck and Co. frame that was built with a one-piece crank. I pulled the crank off to find that the bottom bracket shell (shown below) has a metal cup for the caged bearings to sit in on each side. I tried loosening them with my hands but they won't budge. I was wondering if it was possible to remove these cups, if there are threads underneath them, and if this shell could be used for a more modern crank/bottom bracket set up.

Looking at that frame with the un-mitred tubes and ungodly seem across the bottom of the bottom bracket shell I hope you didn't pay more than $20 for that frame...
You'll never move any bottom bracket cup with your hands - even if it was a Campagnolo "bearing race". Since there are no notches in the side for a BB wrench to fit I'd hazzard a guess that it's press fit an there may be no threads in the BB shell.
You could be on a hiding to nothing... If you had the correct chamfer tools you could fit an old Mavic bottom bracket into an unthreaded bottom bracket shell but I'm guessing you're kinda fcuked.
Pay $25 on craigslist and get a frame worth saving.

This was a frame I found at my grandparent's place that had been sitting on the side of the house since it's last owner (my mom) had ridden it to high school.
And I ended up ponding out the pressed in cup with a rubber mallet to find an unthreaded shell.
So yes sir, fcuked, I am. Oh well. I'll just wait for the next opportunity to pop up.

Use a screwdriver and hammer to pop those cups out from the inside.....to use a modern crank you'll probably need a "American to European" bottom bracket conversion set/cups.
I have done this maneuver before for a few clients (with the un-mitered tubes extending into the bb shell), its not fun.
