I was looking at buying an older cannondale to fix up but I just found out it only has 12 gears. I am used to riding a hybrid that has 21 gears. I just want to get a road bike that is faster...how will the 12 gears affect the speed? Also is it possible to upgrade to more gears.

More gears won't make you faster. You can set up an old 6 speed with the same range as a new 10 speed, you just won't have as many in between gears. While the new, tighter spacing allows you to keep a slightly more consistent pace, it's mostly marketing.
