Old S/A 3 speed

I've got an old Rudge with a Sturmey Archer AW hub gear but
the sprocket is held on by screwing (like a normal fixed
sprocket would be) and I can't find any ref to it on the
web. Every thing that I have found so far refers to a
circlip fixing. Can anyone point me to a site that has the
correct information?

If it is, you just need a 1/8" chain whip and a gorilla to
remove it.

That makes sense but what does the gorilla hang on to?.

Sturmey sprockets are carried on a component called the
'driver'. I know of three types: the common 3-splined type
with a circlip, a rare 12-splined type with a left-hand
threaded lockring, and the threaded model that you have.

To remove your sprocket, you first need to take the driver
out of the hub. Loosen the locknut for the right hand cone,
and remove it. Unscrew the cone, and the driver will lift
off with the sprocket attached. You need to note the
position of the cone, because gear adjusment depends on it
being replaced accurately.

To remove the sprocket from the driver, place the driver prongs-
downward astride a suitable steel bar, and heave on the
sprocket with a chain whip. The driver needs to be well
supported, or you may damage it.

Most Sturmey drivers are interchangeable, so you can replace
your threaded one with the more common 3-splined version if
you prefer.
