Old Raleigh frame project and 105 drivetrain - update and advice

    Well, this is getting expensive but fun. My idea of the ideal bike for
    me, which is what this project is rapidly becoming have evolved
    somewhat. The 531 mixte frame is off being painted golden yellow, and I
    have aquired the 105 triple, bb, front and rear mechs. I have arranged
    for the frame to be cold set to 130 while its off being painted, and
    have bought new (another ebay bargain) front and rear new shimano hub
    mavic rims 700c wheels that will take a cassette hub so I can go
    modern🙂

    I don't really like the downtube shifters on my current bike, and
    really fancy bar end shifters on a nitto moustache bar as in this bike

    existing drops. I don't want sti's, have some nice NOS dia compe non
    aero I want to use

    So my questions are:

    My 105's are nine speed so what shifters can I use. Theres some
    Dura-Ace 9 Speed Bar end shifters on ebay - I take it these will work
    with presumably a 9 speed cassette..can I get 8 speed bar end shifters
    and and eight speed cassette instead?

    If I don't decide to do this then there are various shimano deore 9
    speed shift only units - will these work?

    Do I have to use a shimano chain wiith the special shimano rivet you
    rip off with pliers? (how does this work when you take it off for e.g
    cleaning..)

    You could - but I'd go 9 speed. It's the newer standard, so is more likely
    to remain available for longer. And you get an extra cog :-)

    I mentioned this about ebay before, talking about chains: Ebay isn't
    necessarily cheap. For example the DA 9 speed shifters up there at the
    moment are 35 quid + 3 quid postage. But they don't come with cables. Settle
    do them for 40 quid, including postage and cables - the full box set. (They
    do the 8 speed for 32 quid if you are feeling tight).

    For the back, yes, for the front, possibly not.

    No - use an SRAM chain, and make sure you get one with the powerlink.

    Seconded. And I imagine most of the rest of the NG would endorse SRAM
    chains.

    You can use any non-indexed shifters, and many bar end shifters which
    are indexed have a catch that puts them in non-indexed mode. If you're
    cold setting to 130 then you can use an eight or a nine speed cassette;
    if you can only get nine speed bar end shifters I would strongly
    recommend going for a nine speed cassette, as indexing, while it's not
    vital, is nice-to-have for the rear deraileur. Personally I would leave
    indexing off for the front deraileur.

    No, don't use Shimano chain. SRAM chains are just better all round. Make
    sure you get one with the (optional) magic joining link, it makes
    taking the chain off _so_ much easier.
