I'm brand new to bikes. Literally. It was 2 days ago that I found it in the back of my father-in-law's garage and decided to work on it a bit.
Anyway, I'd like to fix this up into a single speed bike, but when I went to the local bike shop I was told I'd need 'Horizontal' drop outs. The salesman also told me I shouldn't be putting too much money into this frame. He was more into me just buying a new bike if I was going to go over $200 on repairs. Which made me feel kinda better about the bike since things I read online made me feel like it's not a good one 🙁
Back on track; Surly sells Braze on Horizontal drop outs. Is this something that I can have put onto my Omni 10 to make it able to accept single speed hubs? My friend told me he'll help me out with the bike if I need anything done. He's made some bike frames before IIRC.

Beyond some bike-specific tools (e.g., a chain tool, a spoke wrench, cone wrenches, etc..), you can spend close-to-nothing or as much as you want in converting your bike to a Single Speed.
I actually rigged it up to work after reading around on this site and the Sheldon Brown site. Now I'm at the stage where i want to continuously tinker with the bike, but it is working properly. It seems that the only gear I could have the bike at in with it's stock parts is the 9th gear, but if I can get a flip flop hub I can change that hopefully.
