Alright, this is my first post in here. Had my dirt cheap bike stolen the other week and now I've gotten an old bike from my Grandpa's garage. This thing will definately need some work. I'm going to replace the brakes and I'm pretty sure I can figure that out.
My question is about the gears and the shifter. It's one of these old 3-speed bikes and after my little test ride last night I think right now it's stuck in the high gear. I took a look at the cable running from the gear box to the back wheel and its not even connected, I can pull it out. Anyone have any experience with bikes like these, or could you point me in the right direction?

Yes, it will be stuck in high gear if the cable is disconnected or slack.

I've got a lot of info on these on my Website. A good place to start is:
You have to connect the cable to a piece that's look like a little chain . This little ``chain`` is screw in the rear axle.(If the transmission is Sturmey Archer). After this you have to adjust the tension of the cable like this: Put the shifter on the first speed and the little ``chain`` must be completely out of the housing . Put a drop of oil on the little ``chain``. Make a road test and re-adjust if needed. On speed 3 the cable will have no tension(or very little tension) Good luck! Give me news of this .
