Oh, gods of Lube! can thou help a humble twiddler?

I regularly lube and wipe down my chain on my commuter (well... a
regularly as I can remember and if it gets noisy or mucky!

The last 2 mornings riding in to work have been driven almos
apoplectic(?) by chain squeaking like a "Big hairy squeaky thing!!!" bu
forgotten to do anything about it as it goes silent/smooth on the retur
journey at night

Im assuming this is a temperature thing (been below 5deg at my plac
high on the hill) and remember Rohloff hubgear people say that there i
a summer and winter verion for their hubs for said temperature reason
(my rig i just a lowly DeoreLX 8spd. 11-30x44T

Is there a better/worse product for the darker months that I should use
(chain is only 9months/4000k old

What sort of lube? You use dry lube? wax?

With the hub gear, energy loss due to viscosity of the oil might be much
more of a problem. But what harm would a low-viscosity oil do in summer?

Are you sure its the chain? Maybe BB???

Nah, gave up on waxes a few years back. Keep everything very clea
but it dissapears way too quick when colder/wet and you go thru i
too quickl

Been using TriFlow but just picked up a bottle of 'ProLink' a
recommended by Leigh at C

Dont go making me paranoid with evil talk about BBs!!! Spent the last
months hunting down noises in my new Chorus grouppo on the roadie
Definetly chain. Jumped off this morning to put my ear up to drivetrai
to ensure it was in fact the culpri

Haven't tried ProLink

As far as others go, this is good stuff. There was a thread on usin
engine oil a few weeks ago (as an alternative). I used to use it in m
young age. Can remember that chain got really dirty really fast. Giv
the shell a try. If you like it, it's excellent value for money. M
commute chain has ticked 3500 km, going to replace it within next 50
km. $50 for Ultegra

As far as cold weather goes, I had a feeling that the viscosity in col
mornings went up, hence felt heavy (relatively bad). Seem to have go
used to it. Muscles and joints don't seem to like the near 0 degree
anyway. So my average speed has dropped a tad. :
