my wife and i have a norco evolution tandem. the pedals are in sync and linked together. what i mean is we are both in the same upstroke or downstroke. now i was thinkin and i know i probably shouldn't what if i offset the pedals by 90 degrees? so that we would not be pedaling together but just ahead or behind each other. now i need to confess that my wife has longer and stronger legs. before i try i wonder if this could damage something other than my ego?

I remember reading an article about this a while ago, I was just searching for it but can't seem to find it now. From what I remember the advantages were a more consistent power delivery, and the disadvantages were the bike is harder to balance with both riders being out of phase, especially when standing. Also watch out on corners, when the captain's inside pedal is up the stoker's won't be.
Maybe when my brain starts functioning at full speed I'll remember where I read the article and post the link.

considering that it took a while to get into enough sync just to ride and that i do not want to mess with that or to crash. i think what you are saying makes sense. thanks! -
the chain cranks on our tandem (Cannondale) came with an offset of about 10 degrees (front leading).. we haven't had reason to change them. i can sometimes tell that my wifes power stroke is slightly delayed and it seems to me that my spinning is at a more uniform rate, compared to my solo bike. however,
i've talked with club folks who say that fully syn works fine for them and that the way most bikes are setup.
