Yes, I noticed the threads on the pre-built Mavic wheels. I hope it isn't
accurate as I have one of those sweet ES wheelsets waiting to be used at
some point. I've historically built my own wheels, plain old 14/15 spokes,
32h, Mavic Open Pro, or Open 4CD rims. Nothing fancy, just reliable stuff.

I do have experience with one other Mavic pre-built wheel -- the older
Classics Pros. Those things have been great to me. I have to check my log,
but they've got to be around 30k miles by now. Very good wheels. I love
them. Never an issue with them.

I love the older Mavic stuff - the Mektronic represents the newest Mavic
stuff I've got, not counting wheels only. The old gruppos were great. I
have a few Zap groups as spares, as I have one of those on my old Lotus --
Gotta have it set up like Chris did! The Zap rear mech is a little more
touchy than the Mektronic - sensitive to chain tension. Mavic tweaked that
design just enough. The Mektronic mechanicals are essentially the same as
the Zap, just revised for 9sp, plus the tweaking mentioned above. The
Mektronic rear has been a pleasant surprise!
Of course, for the front I don't use the unfortunate Mektronic setup, but
have a downtube Mavic/Simplex retrofriction shifter. Love those things.

seriously though, some of the mavic thread is absolutely accurate. just
not the whiny complainy irrational fact-free conjecture from those with
no experience.
