Odd Bikes

I am planning to build a bike using an old steel Bianchi road frame with hybrid/cyclocross wheels, a 26" tri steel fork, etc. It's gonna be cheap and hopefully more apt for the roads near my new house; although I've received a few "I think you're nuts" looks. What I'd like to know is what odd combinations anyone has come up with that have worked even though everyone else told you it wouldn't. 😄
