  1. If you are starting among the masses in the NYC Marathon how
far do you have to go until you can dictate your pace after
crossing the starting line? A mile, two, more?

  2. Once you're over the bridge it gets a lot easier (but I'm
only an 7.30 min miler) but you're still jumping from side
to side to get past them.

Like all races, it's got its full share of [censored] who
start at the front even though they're walking or
crawling after a mile - if anyone knows why they do this,
    please tell me.

I reckon it is a hard race to set your own pace completely
within the first few miles - there are a lot of people. It's
not the fastest race in the world but imho it's the best.

Thanks for the reply, I think I'm going to go for a Boston
Qualifier on Sept 27th and just do NY as a long run for the
    "experience".

At least a couple miles, probably more. Gotta say, the
ENTIRE race was nearly elbow-to-elbow and never
comfortable. I think you have a good idea to shoot for a
good qualifying time elsewhere and just run NYC for the
enjoyment of the amazing experience. Ain't nothing like
having 3 million people cheer for you live lining the
    course from start to finish!
