Received e-mail this morning that I "won" the Marine Corps Marathon lottery and will therefore
attempt to run my third MCM in October. The only kind of lottery I apparently have good luck in
is the kind where I pay $80. ;-) This apparently was the first-batch drawing; although it should
not matter when one registered, I did so minutes after midnight on the first possible day to
enter the lottery.
It will be interesting to experience yet another unique DC atmosphere at the race. In 2001, my first
marathon, the race environment was saturated with very recent 9/11 effects; in 2002, for a second
straight year there were security concerns, but this time it was whether the DC snipers would be
caught before the race (they were); in 2003, I expect that some of the Marines who hand me water or
untie my timing chip after the race and say, for some reason, "are you OK, sir?", will have recently
returned from service in Iraq. It will be nice to thank them in person.
I guess this means I need to run this summer after all. The good news is this probably saves me from
the temptation of a 100-miler before Thanksgiving.
