Even taking out the motorways it seems I've still got plenty of touring to do.

Hopefully like many on the group I've no shortage of places to go. On todays ride of 55 miles <1> after leaving behind the 'burbs of SE Leicester the biggest place I passed through was the heaving metropolis of Uppingham, Rutland (never, never say Uppingham is in Leicestershire if you wish to leave Rutland alive). Cars were few and far between and while the scenery may not be as stunning as say the Peak or Lake Districts it is nontheless very pleasant with the lanes twisting, turning and rolling to follow the folds of the land rather than cut through it. The only bit of real traffic encountered was on a short stretch of the A6003 Uppingham to Oakham road and presumably most of these were heading to Rutland Water so they could spend a glorious afternoon cheek by jowl with their fellows. Many of them had bikes strapped to racks so the families could ride the perimeter track of Rutland Water, nothing wrong with that, done it myself <2> a fair bit but it made me smile to see them passing by deserted lanes so they could jostle with one another on the crowded shared use track. <1> And it's easy to increase this considerably without having to pass through sizable towns nor mixing with heavy traffic. <2> When Offspring was small and sometimes in the winter early in the morning when I need a quick mtb fix.
