non warping rotors?

  1. I bought into the low buy-in price of Avid mechanicals.
    While people complain of warpage with all disc brakes, the
    avids seem to be a step up, err down.

    Anyways, thoughts on warpage due to rotor design/production,
    due to brake design (deflecting the rotor), due to operator
    error (i.e. me while putting the wheel on).

    And yes I realize the last suggested cause is most likely
    for myself and everyone else with warped rotors.

    What is your question or comment? Your rotors warped? They didn't warp?

    I've run disc brakes for several years, both mechanical and hydraulic. My thoughts:

    "warpage due to rotor design/production"

    Not an issue. Design and production are fine.

    "due to brake design"

    Not an issue if you set the brakes up as per their instructions.

    "due to operator error (i.e. me while putting the wheel on)"

    If you didn't set up the calipers properly, you could have warped the rotor. I suppose you could have warped it if you crammed the wheel in to its QR and didn't pay attention to whether or not the rotor was seated in the caliper. But.... I've rammed my rotor in to the caliper bunches of times without bending the rotor, so you would have had to cram it in there without any regard to the fact that the wheel wasn't interfacing properly.

    Patience, you got it with the balance of your post. The
    impetus was a severely warped rotor on my part. Then I began
    checking reviews and it seems that the avid mechanicals
    suffer a much higher percentage of warping than other disc
    brakes (seems; i didn't tally anything up, and mtbr is
    hardly reputable).

    I listed a few commonly blamed causes just to see if
    there would be any agreement (and I'll wait for a few
    more replies).

    I would guess that external forces on the rotor during
    crashes, transport, and storage would be the prime culprit
    (but no one blames themselves for equipment failure).
    Personally my storage is fine, but my transporting of the
    wheel could use some improvement.

    I started out with Hope C2's. Then I got a second bike and
    put Avid mechs on
    it.

    Upshot of that was that I standardized on Hope discs on both
    wheelsets for interchangability (the Hope pads need a little
    more swept area than the Avid discs have).

    Haven't had any problems with Hope rotors warping. They're a
    little thicker (about .075" vs .070"😉. Maybe replace the
    warped Avid rotor with a Hope?

    It is an interesting thing- the more expensive the brake,
    the thinner (hence lighter) the rotor. The thinner the
    rotor, the more likely to warp. The stoutest rotors I've
    seen are the cheap Aztec/Diatech replacement rotors. If
    warpage is a constant problem, get a set of these, and I
    would expect all your issues to vanish.
