You were of course all correct. It wasn't the gears at all - it was friction
along the cable route, particularly where it goes round the bottom bracket.
Greased around there, dribbled oil thru' the cable housing till it was
coming out t'other end and, guess what? Works like a dream now. Thanks
chaps.
