Hi, I started road cycling last summer, I bought a 2009 Cannondale synapse, al frame, and I want to learn more about working on my bike myself. I am not familiar with much of the tech jargon that I've seen in many of these posts and am wondering if there is a good free online guide to how my whole gear/shifter/cable system works, and what the differences are between different brakes and shifting systems and such, Also, I would really like a good place to start for guidelines regarding cable tension, chain wear, gear maintenance, etc. Even some good terms and definitions to know would be helpful, then I can absorb more from this forum.

Buy a manual at your book store. Most of the manuals have good comprehensive information, and the better ones have a glossary with all of the terms in them. The one that I recommend is Bicycle Maintenance & Repair for Road & Mountain bikes from Rodale Press. This manual is affordable, less than $30.00 US. It has a full glossary and even has contact information and websites for many of the major bike and component manufacturers, along with all of the technical information that you need to keep your bike roadworthy. You should be able to find it at your local major book store or visit www.rodalestore.com or call 800-848-4735. And no, I don't work for or receive payment of any kind from Rodale Press. I am just impressed by how good the book is and like to pass on the great information to others.
