"Neiwand in custody on stalking charges

Former world champion cyclist Gary Neiwand is in jail on Friday night after being remanded on stalking charges.

Neiwand appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday on five charges of stalking and one of theft.

The court heard the stalking charges stem from a relationship Neiwand formed with a woman earlier this year.

Police allege he stalked the woman over a mobile phone.

Neiwand, a former Commonwealth champion and an Olympic silver medallist, has had a tumultuous personal life since retiring from the sport after the Sydney Olympics.

He arrived at court in a police car after being picked up on Friday afternoon.

The court heard the theft charge related to a Telstra phone bill he allegedly stole from a house in South Melbourne in May this year.

Neiwand was remanded in custody to appear in the same court next Wednesday."
