I have a Nigel Dean Tourmaster, circa 1992, the frame number of which I have never been able to find. Is it such a superb frame that the builder would have considered a mere number to be an insult or is there one stamped on some hidden part I have not yet found?

Dunno about Nigel Deans, but frame numbers are sometimes stamped /faintly/ on the bottom bracket shell and full up with paint.
I had a bike built around a Nigel Dean touring frame (early 1990's), and it had no frame number (usual place is on bottom bracket, where it can be obscured by a cable guide - not in my case, though). I didn't bother taking the fork off in order to inspect the fork tube.

Nathan's college bike is a Nigel Dean World Tour we had refurbished. I can't remember ever seeing a frame number on it when it was in 'original' livery.

Frame numbers are sometimes stamped on one of the rear dropouts. I presume you've checked there?
