Out for a 20 mile ride today on my road bike on a flat country lane when a guy in his 20s overtakes me on a MTB with commuting gear and a rucksack on. Aha - the game's afoot I think and rise to the bait. After a while the guy is still doing 17 mph and is showing no signs of blowing up -if anything he's getting away.
Start getting serious and catch him up ready for a short incline which will surely see him slow down - but no, he's still doing 17 mph. Reach steep downhill section and this time he does max out at 22 mph due to his gears. I drop into 52x12 and know I could take him here, but decide not to as there is another uphill section soon, which he takes easily as it turns out.
Unfortunately, he turned off after that but it was a most enjoyable "race" and it was good to see I was fit enough to trail a guy 20 years my junior quite easily, albeit on a faster bike :-)
