Got home from work, got an SMS message from housemate "What's for dinner?" I reply that I fancy a
short and easy ride to a pub, did he fancy it - food/beer on me.

Now Dave, bless him, isn't overly fit despite being a 30" waist and does suffer with his asthma
(serves him right for still smoking!). Add to that his MTB is a no brander made from steel with a
very complicated frame shape (for a hard tail) and weighs a ton.
He asks "is it far?" I know it's about 5 miles, but decline to tell him, but suggested we take
the towpath cos it';; be quite flat, quite easy and less stressful than the roads. He's well
up for that.
11 miles later and he's really cursing me. After several "how much further?", "nearly there!"
conversations he was really out for blood. We were hardly gunning it, I let him set pace and we did
11m in 1 hour 20! I honestly didn't realise the towpath meandered that much out of the way. No that
he believes me.
Lovely local gammon steak with all the trimmings, in the garden by the canal, couple of pints
(stella for him, lemonade for me - I'm zero tolerance on drink driving/cycling/riding). It starts to
get a bit dark and chilly so we decide to head off. However i suggest we take the road this time,
knowing its much shorter but undulating.
5 miles in 30 mins - again at Dave's pace. I don't think I got onto my largest chainring on
the way home!
Fun evening though, I feel great for it but Dave's not so sure.
I wonder if I'll get him to do it again though?
