  1. with a Nexus 8-spd just sitting in the shop, and money (as always)
burning a hole in my pocket, does anyone have any information on
'alternative' shifter set-ups? The stock shifter/brake lever assembly
leaves me cold. Of particular interest would be anything that can be
    used with drop bars.

I leave it to the collective wisdom and experience of the group...

Shimano make two types, a Rapidfire-type and a twist grip. For drop
bars, you *may* be able to bodge up something using an Shimano 9 speed
derailleur shifter and a Travel Agent. This has been reported to work
with the old 7-speed Nexus, but the 8 speed may be different. Note that
the shifter will work in reverse!

I would pop out to the shed and measure the cable pull of the Nexus
Inter-8, but as it's fully enclosed in housing it's not easy.
