newbie to mtb's

hello all,

Well first post to the group I'm form the uk and just
getting into mountain biking pretty difficult living in
the city but get away to Scotland pretty often. So plenty
of opportunity there to break a bone or two.

Off the beaten track this is what I'm thinking of doing.

I was hoping to jump into the deep end and start building
a custom bike just for the experience to learn how
everything works so I can fix service and tinker with it
when it up and running. I have a basic concept of how
everything works but was looking for some kind of guide or
book to read whilst doing it or beforehand, and would
appreciate if anyone could suggest some recommended
reading.

I guess the first place to start is to get some kind of
frame holder and then a frame. Which is not as simple as I
thought as there are so many types of frames so I guess I
would be looking for one suited to my needs or one that
mediates between city use and off road use although that
might be a mix of the frame and tyre.

Anyways before I ramble on and take-up more of your time
I'd appreciate a nudge in the right direction of where to
begin and any helpful info and tips.

Buying a frame will be the dearer option and you will spend
all your time asking people what bits fit and what bits dont
..better to buy a good bike and service it yourself as
things go wrong .

Sounds like good advice thinking about it. Upgrade \service
it as an when nescesary and take it from there is the
general impression I'm getting.

In other words, Lennard Zinn, _Zinn and the Art of Mountain
Bike Maintenance_, ISBN 1-884737-47-1. I think it's in its
3rd or 4th edition.

I'd recommend buying a complete bike rather than building
one up from bits, then tinker with it while it's still
whole. Building a bike up from its constituent parts is
rather pricey.
