  1. Has anyone any experience of taking Silymarin (Milk Thistle). I'm thinking
of buying some online but what is the RDA, and is there anything I should be
looking out for re mg content and price?

I've read that it might help me with my sleepless nights, or is that wishful
    thinking?!

Many thanks if you can help

Sleepness nights? Personally, I'd take melatonin...

  3. hhhhmmmm... I tried posting this about an hour ago, but it never showed
up. I'm sorry if this is a repost.
    ---------------------
I don't know for sure, but I would imagine that there is probably no
defined RDA for milk thistle, as it is not an isolated component. Of
the few supplements I take, the lables tend to have a lot of *'s on
them because there is no RDA for many of the whole food ingredients.

I've never heard of using milk thistle for insomnia, but that doesn't
mean it couldn't be used as such. Most applications of milk thistle
have to do with some sort of detox program since it supports the liver.

How long have you had insomnia? Can you possibly trace your insomnia
to particular foods? The first things to look for is food or drinks
    that contain caffeine.

"As caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, it has also been
linked to insomnia, nervousness, and anxiety. It is also a cardiac
muscle stimulant, a diuretic, and a stimulant of gastric acid secretion
    in the stomach."

    "29 Secrets to a Good Night's Sleep"

One of the recent pieces of advice I used from that page is a sunrise
alarm clock. I didn't buy the one Dr. Mercola sells because it's too
expensive. Better than the sunrise effect it has for waking me up, I
especially like the sunset effect you can use to help you go to sleep.
After using it for less than 3 months, I find that it's now hard to go
to sleep without turning on sunset. I find it very relaxing.

    Hope that helps.
    Max.

No sign of your original post Max. You could be right about the RDA, but as
I have osteoarthritis I need to go back to square one and re-think this as
milk thistle might not be the answer after all. I drink 2 pints of water
every day, I've already given up coffee and processed food, and I limit
myself to one cup of tea per day. (There's only so much deprivation I can
    take!)

I've had insomnia for many years, and lots of joint replacement ops haven't
helped. I can get off to sleep quickly but wake up about 60 - 120 mins
    later.

I've looked at the websites - they're very useful. The Mercola site looks
good, so I might start off by trying the "socks in bed approach" first of
all. The clock might have to wait until I've tried all the rest of the
    suggestions.

    Many thanks for your reply

Thanks for the recommendation. Looking at the various websites it would seem
    a better option.
    Thanks
