I am getting my feet wet in the sport and need a better road bike. Any advice to buy under $1000. Pawn shops?, craigs list? Are vintage road bikes (70's-80's) a good option?

old (circa 1980) swing road bike, w aluminum or magnesium shimano triple crank set everything else is steel.

Yes, buying a used bike can be a good option. Check Craig's List, eBay, etc. You can also buy a good new bike for $1000.
A shop near my house has Trek 1500s on sale for $950.

Check your LBSs and test ride some bikes in your price range and see if there is anything that you like.I prefer to buy new because I don't think there is much of a savings buying used and I don't get a warranty, some perks of buying (swap out handlebars, stems, etc at no or little cost), don't know the maintenace that has been done, etc. But that doesn't mean I won't buy a used bike. If I find something I like and I think it is a good deal, I'd buy it.
