Interesting to see bicycle outriders used in the NYCM as "protection" for the leading runners. All nicely helmetted of course. two things struck me. First there were a couple of moped outriders who also wore bicycle helmets rather than motorbike crash helemts---is this a US thing or just a race thing? Second, the leading women passed some of the wheelchair contestants and I noticed a fair few using hand-cycles rather than wheel chairs. Presumably the hand-cycles would have to have specific single-speed gearing for them to be competitive with traditional racing wheelchairs.
