New wheels or not?

Ciao gracieandjason. A nice pair of wheels are always a nice upgrade, IMHO.

Just don't get caught up in what your LBS tells you about boutique wheels. A nice set of rims (a la mavic open pro or ambrosio, for example - I am not aware of the quality of midrange bontrager, but i am sure someone else can comment) and midrange hubs (ultegra or, if you are going to splurge, Campagnolo Chorus) will give you a nice pair of reliable wheels and you will feel the difference and enjoy your rides more.

Personally an upgrade to better wheelsets is the best upgrade anyone can make on their stock bikes unless you have killer wheelsets to begin with.

Bontragers are nice and I have nothing against them except for the price of the [censored] Lite (sweet but unless you're getting paid like LA... you get the pic). Aside from the bontragers there are other good value wheelsets around like Campag's Vento and Scirroco (which can also be laced with Shimano hubs), Mavic's Ksyrium SLs, and Vuelta Crossers.

Another route is to use use your existing hubs built up around Mavic's CXP33 rims or Alexx's rims laced with good quality double butted flat spokes.

Find a good LBS that will let you test ride new wheels on your bike. Then you will know whether you are going to feel a difference. You find that your existing wheels feel just as good as the new ones, or you may love the feel of a new wheelset.

There is also the bling factor of flashy new wheels - who can resist a pair of Ksyriums or Campy Eurus with bladed spokes and sleek rims...

Yeah, and Open Pros and DA hubs don't hurt the wallet neearly as bad.
