IMHO, just getting back into mountain biking, I was looking at the
newer bikes. I found that you can rent at some LBS's for a few bucks
each day, and try out many different types of bikes they have.

Ask around for a rental shop, you might be surprised with what you
like and others like.

I still ride my ridgid, 1990ish fuji tahoe. I'm still happy.

Any bikestore will let you try out any bike.

Or, if you need more than a day, like he said, rent one.
