  1. I was thinking the other day that road racing in some cases doesn't test your abiliity to handle the bike that much. Except criteriums. But those are dangerous, and unless you get to the front, it kind of sucks.

So I was thinking about a new type of race. Basically you use big open spaces, like huge parking lots that are obviously clean and paved. Then you set up very technical courses with many turns, that might be around a mile long. Then you let people race.

There will be different heats though, just so there aren't too many people in one heat. Maybe like a max of 10 people in one heat.

A really cool race would be one that incorperated a multi-story car park. (imagine going down those spiral thingies for cars)

But there should be some rules. Like only 23-25c tires. Handle bars with drops. Also a different class for people with fixed gear bikes, or single speeds. Oh yes, and only road bikes. There are probably many more rules...

The good thing is that the rules will give the riders the same advantage. And in some cases it can make it harder and more fun to watch.

Just felt like sharing some ideas. This might be something really cool, or just a bad idea.

  2. I saw a race today like I hadn't seen before. It was a 6-hour marathon road event on laps of 2.5 miles. MTB races have had 24 hour endurance events for a long time and this was the same thing except it was 6 instead of 24, it was road instead of dirt, and it was teams of 4 with multiple categories racing at the same time. I really liked the idea especially for less experienced racers.

  3. That sounds pretty cool! I actually want to start something of this nature around here. But I need to plan out all the things. And get a parking lot that is big enough. Or a combination of roads and parking lots.

Not only will these types of races be good for begineers (lower class), but also it will challenge even the best.

Kind of cheesy, but these would be called "Tour de Lots" (yes go and laugh), and for short, "TDLs", so now even the pros could have different TDL rankings. This way you can judge if a rider would be good at a technical race or not.

But that is thinking way down the road. But it would be so funny! Hearing a commentator say something like, "...and there goes George Hincapie, don't know if he will do good on this technical bit coming up. He finished 10th in last years TDL championships."

Oh boy, I imagine too much.

Any pointers for setting up one of these types of events? I just have to try it with my friends.

I think you should do it. Even if it's just you and a few friends trying it out for fun one evening. Good stuff like this has a way of catching fire and before you know it you're in the center of something new and exciting.

But you never know unless you try.

Diablo, there are a number of marathon (12 or 24 hour) road team events here in Europe. Usually on a closed course (city centre or something along those lines). Seem to be a lot of fun...
