  1. hey guys!

i'm new here, joined literally seconds ago. i'm a 14 y/o boy living in melbourne, and i want to get involved with cycling for a number of reasons. one is my weight, another is that i enjoy cycling, and the last is that i've been told that i have a lot of potential.

of course, i need to acquire a new bike before i continue, so what do u think??
i have rather a modest budget, as i am paying for it myself.

also, just a bit about me. i'm 5'11, i weigh 80 kg, i'm not very fit, but fit enough to ride up mount buffalo in granny gear, and i want to become very fit, because quite frankly i am embarrassed about my size.

any ideas about training would also be much appreciated, i live very close to a velodrome, so perhaps sumthing on that???

    thanks

    john

  2. Great age to start.

Get out there find a local club and go check out some of the racing they do. Most clubs usually have an organised ride once a week. Find out when this is on and go along. You will meet heaps of friends, learn heaps from the older guys and girls.

Once you start racing, the weight will fall off you as you become more interested in the competition side of things. Training becomes fun and social. Cycling is full of people from all walks of life and ages. You can do it until your ready for a box, unlike a lot of sports that you usually have to retire from at 30 because of stuffed joints and the like.
Aerobic activity also stimulates your brain so you will find it easier to concentrate in class and study.

    Get out there and ride

    Good luck

  3. G'day John

Good on you for getting into cycling.

I agree whole heartedly with the previous fellow. There's group rides for all abilities. If a bike club is a bit daunting ask at your local bike shop.

Yep, the weight will drop off.

    Get into it lad!! 😉

  4. Here's a cheer to you for getting into cycling instead of crack or bashing! You won't regret this decision in your life.

See if you can get a secondhand bike first to start you out with, that way you will be able to see what you like before you splash out on a new bike, plus you'll be able to sell it again if you don't like it for much the same price (check ebay).
