I've finally decided to deal with the junk grade crankset that came on my GT "comfort bike" . Decided on lower gearing to make the hills a bit easeier ... then while I was at it, figured i might as well get a new mega-range rear freewheel. So ... the new parts are susbstantially different from the original setup and i'm unsure how to determine the length of chain i should use. At this point, i'm not going to try to have enough chain for the large crankset sprocket and the 34 t rear monster ... just so it can reach the next down sprocket which is 24t.
I've wandered the net with google's help a fair amount but haven't found any info on this issue. Any links or suggestions?

Sounds like you are probably going to need a new chain. You should be able to pick one up for under $20.00 on line or at your LBS. I'm a fan of SRAM and the Power Llink, though opinions and experiences may vary.

Thanks for the link .. forgot to mention the new chain as part of the package. I guess I'll try setting up for the largest cogs as Park's suggests and take some out as above if the new derailleur can't take up all the slack.
