I am contemplating buying a new bike but am baulking at spending $4,000-$5,000.
Another alternative would be to buy a new frame for $1500-$2000 and use my current running gear on it(ultegra 9 speed).
Is this a viable alternative-to my way of thinking at least I will be riding a custom frame and lets face it Ultegra aint that bad.

It's viable, but remember that there are heaps of bits and pieces you'll need, which can be quite costly. If you can use everything from your current ride, great. Think about handlebars, seatpost, cabling, brakes, bidon cages, wheelset etc etc etc. As long as they're all compatible, it's definitely doable.
