Learning the hard way that not all parts are interchangeable.
Replaced a trashed (trash grade?) Suntour crankset with a Shimano Alivio that appears much more durable. Unfortunately, it appears the sprockets are further away from the frame center line and the Shimao Nexave (sp?) derailleur can't reach out far enough to shift to the 3rd sprocket. This isn't a limit screw adjustment ... I've backed them way off to make sure, then moved the derailleur to the limit of it's range by hand. Am I missing something here? Will a new derailleur fix this or might there be something else I haven't considered?

Most likely a new BB. I'd imagine your axle is too short for your new crank. Measure your center of seat tube to middle ring distance, and make sure it's within specs. If not get one that's enough longer to meet specs.

My late nite revelation was as you suggest ... that a different axle is required. The existing one is too long tho' ... not too short. I'll guess the rings are about 1/4-3/8" too far out. Will try to make sense of Sheldon Brown's page and see what I need. Thanks for the feedback.
