New Crank Set

[font=Arial]I have a Trek 6500 that Ive changed to a hybrid. About six months ago I bought a XT crank set on line. I did not have the tools so I paid my LBS to install it. The biggest reason for the new set was a higher gear than I had with the stock crank set. The new set never shifted as well as the original and I had it back twice with no improvement. I got to thinking that it was supposed to be a good set from a good company and should provide better service than it was. I looked at the bike and read the instructions carefully. The kit came with a plastic bag of plastic washers, spacers. It looked like the LBS used the wrong spacer, there were three sizes and the one called for was 1.7 mm larger than the one used. I was guessing as it looked thiner than the larger one in the kit which had not been used. I took the crank set apart, even though I did not have the correct tools. I verified that the wrong spacer had been used. But I did not think that 5 hundreds of an inch or so would make much differance. I cleaned everything up and put it back together with the right spacer. I did an alignment and then tried it out. I was very surprized to find that it did work just like it was supposed to. I am still surprized that such a small differance made a large improvement.[/font]
