New Cassette Help

No of course its not normal. try a new chain, try adjusting the rear
mech. first though

changed chain and all well, strange though it was a 9sp chain on and I
replaced it with a 9sp, go figure only thing I changed was brand from a
shimano to sram.

Yes but it was most likely worn to the shape of the old cogs, and didn;t match up properly with the new one. New cassette, almost always, means new chain as well.
