Hi, I have recently started commuting to work and I have a 2005 Schwinna Mesa GS, I have recently noticed that the gears are not tall enough and the bike is topping out at around 40kmh.
I was wondering if it is worthwhile upgrading the components on the bike or is it better to get a new bike that is better suited for commuting? The bike has ridden a total of 1000kms since purchase

e.g. a flat bar road bike. I would be looking at spending around $1000 (AUD).
I ride 9 km per day and ride 50km once a month.
FWIW. I would simply change the large chainring OR (if a larger chainring doesn't do it for you) the crankset ... it is fairly easy to swap a ROAD crankset for a MTB crankset, or vice versa.
