new bike advice - again yes i know

been riding a 24" schwinn superstock bmx for the past year or so but
looking to get into mtb, need to get something that will be fine in
urban but can also handle freeride and downhill etc...

my mate tells me full suspension with short travel may suit me best and
has suggested some stock complete bikes. i'm in london but may buy in
vancouver so budget could be from £2k-£3k

can anyone offer any advice or know of a suitable bike? i figure if i'm
going to get into this i may as well get a decent bike instead of
buying a [censored] one then having to buy a decent one later...

Cove, Norco, Brodie, Transition, come to mind if you can find them
across the pond...

Pace RC303 as a hardtail frame to build up or an On-One 456
(frame or complete bike) might be worth considering. Both companies are
UK based and have been great when I've dealt with them. Also Orange
make some very nice full suspension bikes and you shouldn't have too
much trouble finding a demo. They not really optimised for what I think
of as "urban" though- they're proper ride-anywhere mountain bikes.

£2-3k is a big pile of money to burn & it might be that you'd be
best off getting two bikes- one for urban and one for freeride/ hardcore
XC/ downhill. Your budget would certainly run to an Orange Five Pro and
a good urban hardtail.

I'm only slightly jealous of having that much to drop on bikes
in one go!

don't get me wrong, that's a lot of money for me too, looking more at
£2k realisticaly and even then probably go to vancouver to buy it
there... have no space for two bikes though so has to be one, and one
that wont suck to ride to work though the city on but will handle some
of road fun and small jumps and drops...
