  1. Hey guys, recently took my Apollo Creed 21 speed out of the shed after 2 years of sitting there so kinda suck at bikes in general now, maintenance etc, and found the front gears not working, the distance between clicks for 1 and 2 is like 5mm so it basically does nothing. Took it apart completly and still cant fix it.

Anyway I am looking for a new set as cheap as possible but not cheap enough to break in seconds.

At my local bike shop I was offered these which he said is the 2007 model of what I got heh (something like this anyway looks pretty much the same) for £10 per shifter which to me seems a bit too much, are they any good?

I have found a cheap alternative which seems a good deal, £7.95 for these but I have no idea if they are any good, they look like a very slight upgrade to what I already have.

I have also been thinking of moving away from grip shift as to me I have always thought of them as innacurate or hard to turn when wet etc and thought about going for these or these quick shifts (not sure about difference between them 2 look pretty much the same to me), however they may be more limited than gripshift.

    Any advice appreciated, thanks.

  2. Have you tried replacing just the cables?
2 years of not moving may be enough for them to be shot. Unless something is actually wrong with the shifters, then that is the first thing I would do.

  3. Yeah took the shifter to local bike shop he said it was broken.

Anyway I got the black Alivio quick shifters and changed cables over (rubbed oil over cables and put a little bit in all the housings first to avoid fraying as much as possible, seemed to work). However I found some old derailleurs in the shed, wondering if anyone may know something about them and if any may be better than what I am currently using.

These are what I am currently using, rear and front, front one I have no idea of the brand.

These are what I have to choose from, Rear and front, the right front derailleur has no screw to seperate the parts so I can't get the chain in unless I take the chain apart (no tool for it), one on the left does. The rear left one I think I got a very long time ago but may have been an expensive one.

Not very good at taking pics heh. Thanks for any help.

  4. If your new shifters are working with the existing derailleurs, I wouldn't change anything else. Those other derailleurs don't look like a big improvement.
Have you checked your tyres? 2yrs of inactivity could have killed them if they were already old.
