Needing a 7 speed.

Guest
Hi I was just wondering if I could put a 7 speed cassette on a 8/9 speed
wheel .
I have a extra set of wheels and my son was wanting to have to sets of rims
one for road and one for dirt. His bike is a 21 speed .My extra rims are 8/9
speed wheel .At least that's what was on them 8 speed .
Thanks in advance !

Yes, you can put a 7 speed cassette on an 8 speed freehub but you will
need to put a 4.5mm spacer behind the cassette.

If you can't find one at your LBS, Sheldon Brown addresses this and
Harris Cycle can provide the spacer:

Loose Screws also has them for $3.50.

Yes. You'll need a spacer, though. They're not hard to come by; any
competent bike shop knows what they are and may have one in stock.

It'll work with the spacer. Be aware that his current wheels may have
a freewheel instead of a cassette, though; if the plan is to swap the
cassette when swapping wheels, you may have a rude surprise coming.

I'm not planning on swapping the cassette just the wheels .So he has a set
for road and a set for dirt.
I will buy another 7 speed cassette I see them for about 20$ .
Thanks for the replies.
