I have a vintage (mid 80's) trek that I want to put together and I need a fork for the frame. The place for the fork measures 1 1/8". How do I know if I need a threaded or threadless fork? Also, since the frame does not have a crank, how do I determine the correct crank size?

A mid-80s Trek will take a fork with a 1" steerer tube. The original is threaded, but unless you want to use the original headset, you can go threadless, if you like. (FWIW, I think a mid-80s frame looks strange with a threadless-type stem set-up.)
Your bottom bracket shell is 68mm, ISO thread. Crank length is a function of your leg length and your preference.
