Hi everyone, I am looking to get into biking. Primarily for fitness (commuting back and forth from my gym ~ 5 miles each way and weekend riding) I was looking at a hybrid as a good entry level but wasn't sure which one or what is right for me yet. I haven't ridden a bike in 10 yrs (since I was 17) The bikes I was looking at are: ** Trek 7500FX (or maybe even a 7300) - if someone could tell me why one is better than the other, it would help me ** Giant Cypress SX ** Specialized Sirrus Expert
My price range is 500-700 or so and I will be primarily riding on the road and maybe a couple of bike paths.
I am hoping people can share some information/experiences/advice.
Don't know about the Giant or Specialized, but the 7500FX is a very nice bike (we sell *lots* of them). The differences between it and a 7300 include a considerably lighter frame (which is domestic as opposed to import as well), nicer components and no suspension fork or seatpost. I see quite a few of them on metric centuries, so it's suitable for more than just commuting.

Find a bike shop that gives lifetime maintenance on the bikes they sell. Purchase an inexpensive hybrid. Trek and Giant offer good models. A hybrid is a excellent choice for newbies for a number of reasons - more stable, more comfy, less expensive, larger tires and fewer flats. If you want more speed after you get into shape, get a road bike. Use your hybrid for touring and/or commuting.

Everyones input is appreciated.

I love my 7500 FX. One thing I like about it which others might not mention is that it has nice long chainstays, which allow me to use a rear rack and panniers even with my big feet (with my last bike, I couldn't find a pair of panniers that my feet didn't hit).
