  1. Hi All,

This is my first post so please be gently with me!

I have been cycling for about six months averaging about 80 miles per week. After about one hour in the saddle I get really bad neck ache and pain in my lower right back, lumber region. The neck pain is so severe that I basically cant turn my head to look behind me, when turning etc, the back pain seems to drain my energy after about 2 hours of riding! I know this sounds dramatic but basically I have got loads left in my legs but feel crippled with my back.

The problem didn't seem as bad until a few months ago when I changed to Shimano SDP-SL's. When fitting the pedals and cleats I had to raise my saddle by about an inch to get full range out of my legs.

I am about 5'8"-5'9" tall and am riding a 50 cm frame Claud Butler. I don't know whether I am too big for the bike and maybe this is causing the pain.

I generally ride on the hoods just going to the drops for fast downhill sections, like most I presume.

The pain goes away after I have been off the bike for a couple of hours with no long lasting effect.

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

    John

  2. You might want to consider raising your Stem & moving your seat forward a tad.

You should also consider an adjustable stem. They are pricy & a bit heavier than stock components, But worth it if you have problems with your neck.

I put tri bars on mine & when my neck starts aching, I'll put my hand on the elbow rest. Which really puts me vertical because they are positioned behind & above my handlebars.

Good luck & as they say, "necessity is the mother of invention..."

  3. I get EXACTLY the same thing

I am currently testing if it's flexibility. I know my hamstrings are tight, so tight if I bend over to pick something up I tend to bend from my lower back not my hips. Probably why my lumbar region is so flexible - to compensate for the tight hams.

I'm not just doing hamstring stretches but all over the body on the floor once a night when I'm watching TV.

It's going to be a while before my hams are "normal", when I ride I stop to meet training partners and I stretch hams/lower back region. Seemed to delay the onset of the lower back tightness.

Actually I've also noticed I'm more agile and better balanced on my feet since doing the stretches as a completely random side-effect.
