There are two different kinds of alternative supplements - herbs and
nutritional supplements. It is interesting that conventional medicine
is saying how unsafe alternative remedies can be, yet the 4th leading
cause of death in US is properly prescribed and taken pharmaceutical
drugs.
I did not say they were unsafe. I was indicating that they are by no
means as safe as has always been claimed by those selling "safe natural
products".
Safety is a relative issue anyway, and actually higher standards of safety
should be required of herbal preparation or nutraceuticals, for the
following good reasons.
They are sold over the counter to anyone of any intelligence, and often to
persons who are persuaded that they are totally safe, take them in huge
doses and unwisely give them to their children.
They have never been shown to have useful effects on serious medical
conditions or serious symptoms, which is the reason for the tolerance of
side effects in many medications.
They are used mostly for minor symptoms or taken long term with vague
unproven expectations of better health, wherein a very low side effect
profile is desirable.
They are also often used alongside pharmaceuticals without doctors knowing.
Many commonly used herbs and vitamins can interfere with or aggravate the
actions of pharmaceuticals (showing how drug-like they really are).
