Narrower chains on 1985 6 speed?

Howdy.

I have a SRAM PC-48 on my 85 Shogun. It has original shimano 600
6-speed on it. My question is, how narrow can my chain be? 10-spd
weight weenie is out of the question, but I'd like to put a nicer chain
on there when I replace it soon at 1500 miles.

I think the SRAM PC-58 is nickel plated and a bit more bling. Good
stuff.

One question: do you have an objective reason to replace it at 1500
miles?

Use a PC-48 series for 8s...since you say it's 'shimano 600', it is
indexing one ..6s, 7s and 8s spacing is pretty close together-don't use
a 9s chain.

Also use the least expensive compatible chain..no need for plating and
the other things that make it expensive. They are just more expensive,
not 'nicer'...same pins, rollers and plates that make it a chain.
