I saw the same show, but that doesn't sum up prostitution
everywhere! The store where I used to work at in Seattle was
in an area where the prostitutes hung out. They used to be
on 1st Ave., but they got chased further and further north.
At one point in time, we sold rabbit fur jackets. These
young women would come in early in the day and put jackets
on layaway. Then they'd come back between johns to give us
whatever cash they'd just made. They'd almost always have
enough money to get the jacket by the end of the day. And
they did try to get the jacket while they had the cash in
hand lest their pimp take it from them, or they might spend
it on drugs. We'd often see these same poor gals day after
day putting jackets on layaway. Many times they were beaten
up and robbed of the jackets. These were the streetwalkers.
Not the high class call girls.
I did have a friend who worked for a time as security in one
of the high class places. She and I parted company, mainly
because I didn't like the turn her life had taken. And not
just for her choice of career. She got quite heavily into
the drugs and could no longer be trusted. But I did learn
enough from her to know that everything was not all
sunshine, lollipops and roses.
I've also read several books on prostitution written by
either former prostitutes or reporters. One is a very
interesting true life story about prostitution in NYC in the
1950's. In almost all cases, the women who get
lives. They are ashamed of what they do, but they also
feel so dirty and degraded that they feel they can do no
better. It's not a pretty picture at all. And they
certainly aren't rich. Even in the cases where a lot of
money changes hands, not much of that money goes to the
girl. There is almost always someone "looking out" for
them and palms need to be greased.
