I have a bike with a Record 9-Speed ergo group (ca. 1998). Recently, while replacing a broken spoke I took apart the cogset to clean it and noticed some of the cog spacers had a number molded into them. There were two with a 2, one or two with a 4 and two with a 7. They all look to be the same thickness but I don't have an accurate means to measure them. The little booklet that came with the cogset makes no mention of a size variation. Are these just mold identity numbers, or a secret conspiracy by the Soviet olympic road team?

Hmmmm. Now I'm wondering too. I just threw a 13-26 on my 'cross bike and didn't bother looking at which spacer went where. It shifts OK, but I swear (now that the idea is planted in my beanie) that some gears are a bit noisier than they should be. Could it be that there is a correct order to put those spacers in? Yikes.

Are you saying that Camagnolo's secruity is so weak that someone from Shimano (or any other manufacturer) can simply walk in and install different dies on their machine?
No wonder they're no longer the top manufacturer! ;-3)
